The Death of Subpixel Antialiasing
Published: 2018 | Updated: 2024
In macOS Mojave (10.14), Apple quietly killed subpixel antialiasing. For years, operating systems utilized the physical geometry of RGB pixels to fake horizontal resolution, making text on 100-110 ppi monitors look crisp.
The transition to Retina (220+ ppi) displays made this technique largely unnecessary, and computationally expensive. But for users holding onto 1080p or 1440p external monitors, the update rendered their screens visibly blurry overnight.
This essay explores the engineering tradeoff: dropping complex legacy rendering pipelines at the expense of non-Retina hardware fidelity.
