Screens are not solid grids; they are clusters of Red, Green, and Blue subpixels. Subpixel antialiasing uses this physical reality to triple the horizontal resolution of text rendering.

-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased;

This property disables subpixel rendering in favor of grayscale antialiasing. It makes text appear slightly thinner and avoids color fringing on light text against dark backgrounds.
